Job Title: Instructor (Part-Time)

Position Overview:

Hoosier Heights is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced instructor to assist in teaching IU climbing courses and public Hoosier Heights climbing classes. This role will involve teaching fundamental climbing techniques, equipment operation, and safety protocols. By the end of training, instructors are expected to be able to teach classes independently.


Essential Functions:

  • Teach students how to use climbing equipment and explain how it functions.

  • Educate students on climbing movement, footwork, and basic techniques.

  • Monitor students to ensure safety procedures are followed.

  • Use Hoosier Heights customer management software to log students’ attendance

  • Maintain a high-energy, inclusive, and encouraging classroom environment.

Education:

  • Required - High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of active rock climbing experience.

  • Proficiency in top rope and lead belay.

  • Intermediate understanding of climbing equipment, including:

    • Harnesses

    • Carabiners

    • Belay devices

    • Ropes

  • Previous experience in coaching, camp counseling, or outdoor leadership is highly valued.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Climbing Ability: Must be able to demonstrate climbing techniques comfortably on various wall angles.

  • Stamina: Ability to remain on your feet for 6–8 hours per day in a gym environment.

  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (mats, rope bags, or equipment).

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting at $13/hour, with increases throughout the first 4 months based on successful completion of training
